Yemen has been in a state of war for 8 years straight. With the Houthis, the Yemenis government, and Saudi Arabia, Yemen is in a power struggle that doesn’t seem to end. The powers involved fight for land, oil, and power. But, has anyone ever thought about the people stuck in this crisis? Malnutrition and lack of water plague Yemen’s population, on top of that, airstrikes and drone attacks are rampant in the warzones that house more than 24 million people. We present to you the largest humanitarian crisis of the 21st century, and we need you to help us fix it.
Yemen needs urgent financial support, this will be used to import food, water, and build shelters for the people who have been displaced by the war. For these basic needs, Yemen needs a minimum of 2 billion dollars. This is a big goal to meet, but a single donation goes a long way. A small donation can go towards helping a family, or even saving a child from the horrors of malnutrition. Spread this message to friends and family because for 2 billion dollars, we need all the help we can get.
The conflict started out as a rebellion against Ali Abdullah Saleh, and power was handed down Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi. Hadi’s power wasn’t concrete throughout the country so there were revolts. The Shia Houthis, a minority group, led a revolution against the new government, taking the capital Sanaa in 2015. This made the newly appointed president leave to Saudi Arabia. The president collaborated with the Saudi government to try to re-take Sanaa and some other cities, they fought against the Houthis for 7 years, killing more than three-hundred thousand people.
The conflict in Yemen, while being a power struggle, is heavily influenced by religion. Islam has 2 major sects, the Sunni and the Shia. The Shia are a minority on the global scale, being the majority in Iran, Iraq, Bahrain, and Azerbaijan. The other Islamic countries like Saudi Arabia, Syria, Egypt, and the rest are predominantly Sunni. This created a big problem within Yemen, the Houthis, are a Shia separatist group, and the Yemeni and Saudi governments are Sunni. This creates religious motivation for the 2 sides to keep on fighting. What escalates the conflict even further is that Iran is supplying the Shia Houthis, and Saudi Arabia and the UAE are fighting with the official government. On top of that, Yemen used to be two countries, north and south Yemen, but later merged, and now, the Houthis want to separate again. Due to this, the 2 sides will keep on fighting if a higher power doesn’t step in, but all we can do right now is help and we do that by donating.
Every Yemeni in need is a priority, but, since we are working for the future of Yemen, we want to bring most of the attention onto the children of Yemen. Yemen is one of the worst places for children right now. Besides the war and constant bombings, food, water, and medical facilities are a scarce commodity. Malnutrition is rampant in Yemen with 2.3 million children suffering from it as of 2021. The lack of medical facilities makes it even harder to treat these children, almost guaranteeing major health complications for many of these children later in their adult lives. We need to help these children because they will be the major players in improving the economy and society after the war. Its most likely that they will be the people that de-escalate the conflict, and the people that bring improvement to their country.
